Ngu-men xi-sir-heu hen-cih-wann
When we were little, we always played
Tiau-xiann-bi-jien, xinn-za di xi-ngo-zir hau-xiann buu mann wann do
Tiao Pi Jin (skipping rope). Kids today don’t seem to play this any more.
Tiau-xiann-bi-jien jieu sir
Tiao Pi jin...
Ku-i liann-gu zzen, o, sann-gu zzen wann, hu-ze-sir liann-gu zzen wann yo ku-i
could be played by two or three people.
Zei-hau sir sir-gu-zzen
Four people is best.
Jieu liann-gu zzen qinn-do lo-zoh xiann-bi-jien
Two people holding the rope,
Jiuh-sann qinn-do xiann-bi-jien, lien-wa liann-gu zzen jieu tiau
holding it with their feet, and the other two jump over it.
Tiau di sir-heu lie, ieu-di-sir-heu ha ku-i hann keu-jyeh
When you play, sometimes you chant rhymes.
Cann ho gu a mu-zir di. Ngu ji-deh
Sing songs, and the like. I remember ...
Ieu ji-zen, mu-zi Mo-Lann-Ka-Fo-E-Sir-Ih a
a couple of them, such as ”Ma lan kai hua er shi yi” ....
Xi-Sir-Heu Gen-Do-Di-Jy-Ke-Teu-Xi-Guo, ha-ieu
When I was young I used to join the ’landlord’ and snitch watermelons (from the fields), and
Ha ieu ieu-xi jieu-sir tioh-jinn-zir
another game is Jianzi (shuttlecock)
Xinn-za tioh di jinn-zir si lo-gu ji-mau jinn-zir. Ngu-men lo-sir-heu tioh di sir bien-di jinn-zir
Nowadays Jianzi is made of rooster feathers. In the old days it (the base) was flat.
in the middle...
Liann kua ngen-bih zou-di
it was made with two coins.
Wa-minn sir suh-liau di mau-mau-zir
And wrapped with plastic feather.
it’s easy to do dozens of kicks in a go, and its much easier than using the rooster feather jianzi today.
In those days, primary schools use to organize sports games,
and there were jianzi competitions, which I used to take part in.
There was also skipping rope.
Short ropes and long ropes. There were different rules for short ropes.
Singer player, double player. One swings the rope, and the other..
stands face-to-face, chanting ’one, two, three’, and jumping all along
Whoever did the most jumps wins. Another game is with a long rope.
It was also in primary school during sports games,
Each class jump (in a group),
with two boys swinging the rope,
And each person squeezes through the loop. These are pretty much (what we used to play).
