楠溪江有一個員外屋裏

有一個女兒生好顯生好

渠想選女兒婿

消息一傳啊開

驚動爻多顯多個後生兒

渠徠全部走來託媒相親

講親

有徠屋裏極有鈔票

有徠屋裏做官個

有徠屋裏讀書極有出息

該員外個眼珠吶就眙眙花啦爻

決定弗落

祇好[ha]女兒自出主意

員外的女兒想爻三日三夜也冇想出個名堂底

眙牢該個見面的日子就着到[dde]罷

員外一天光早

敲開女兒個門

問渠想訾那能

渠講自黃昏夜裏冇睏好

頭暈顯暈

眼珠也乜顯乜

耳朵也蚊蚊響

渠也祗當渠阿爸問渠點心喫何乜

員外聽個極靈清

也冇別乜辦法

當面選女兒婿許日

該個地方求婚個後生兒走來多顯多

湊鬧熱個也多顯多

人羣底面有一個放牛個娒

生起眉清目秀

因爲還小伉員外個女兒作[u]大起個

以前的時候

楠溪江有一個員外家裏

有一個女兒長得很好看

他想選女婿

消息一傳開

驚動了許多的年輕人

他們全部來託媒相親

講親

有的家裏很有錢

有的家裏是做官的

有的家裏讀書極有出息

這個員外的眼睛都看花了

決定不下來

祇好讓女兒自己出主意

員外的女兒想了三天三夜也沒有想出個名堂來

眼看着見面的日子马上就要到了

員外一天早上

敲開女兒的門

問她想怎麼做

她呀自己晚上沒有睡好

頭很暈

眼睛睜不開

耳朵嗡嗡響

她也祗當她爸爸問她點心吃什麼

她就說喫粥

員外聽得極清楚

感覺極荒唐

也没有别的办法

祇好依她

當面選

當面選女婿那天

這個地方來求婚的年輕男子來了許多

湊熱鬧的人也很多

人羣裏面有一個放牛娃

生得眉清目秀

因爲小時候與員外的女兒一起長大的

也特意走來看

他突然聽到這個員外叫他的名字

后来这里只有三个人

另外两个呢都是世家子弟

他们准备就是以吃粥的比赛决定谁嬴谁输

每个人有一大碗湧燙湧燙的白米粥

一开始

都是

一手端碗

口里面

我不会，我不会，我不会，我不会

他说

后来

大家

他不慌不忙地

把那些富家子弟笑死

Wenzhou Folktale:

Choosing a Son-in-law by Eating Porridge

Once upon a time,

at Nanxi River there was a rich man

who had a daughter who was very beautiful.

He wanted to find a husband for his daughter.

The word got out

A lot of young people got excited.

Those people all hired matchmakers and came to negotiate [as part of the matchmaking process].

Some came from wealthy families,

some came from a family of officials,

some had relatives who were great scholars.

This rich man was overwhelmed [lit. \"his eyes went out of focus (from looking at a lot)\"]

He couldn\'t decide

So he had his daughter decide for herself

The rich man\'s daughter thought for three days and three nights and still had no idea

Soon, it was almost the day for meeting the suitors.

One morning, the rich man

knocked at her daughter\'s door

and asked her what she wanted to do.

She did not sleep well that night.

She was really dizzy.

Her eyes were bad.

Her ears were ringing.

She thought her dad was asking her what she wanted to eat for a snack.

So she said, eat porridge.

The rich man heard her clearly

and thought this was very bizarre

Still, he had no other ideas

so he went with her idea.

On the day for meeting the suitors to choose the son-in-law,

many young men came from the area to ask to marry [the rich man\'s daughter].

There were also a lot of people there just for fun.

In the crowds, there was also a young guy who herded cows

who was very handsome [lit. \"clear eyebrows and handsome eyes\"]

Because he grew up with the rich man\'s daughter

he also decided come to see what was going on.

He suddenly heard this rich man call out his name.

So he blindly responded.

There were a lot of people with the same name or same surname.

The rich man was actually calling the name of someone else.

But that other young man did not show up.

So this young man went in in the other\'s place.

If lucky,

don\'t need to be early [idiom].

You don\'t need to be early if you are lucky. [idiom; literally \"if lucky, don\'t need early morning\"].

Later, there were only three people there.

The other two were both famous people.

They got ready to determine who wins through a porridge-eating competition.

Every person got a big bowl of boiling hot white rice porridge.
