逐家好，我這馬欲共逐家講一个我佮母語關係的故事。
Ta̍k-ke hó, guá tsit-má beh kā ta̍k-ke kóng tsi̍t-ê guá kah bó-gú kuan-hē--ê kòo-sū.
Hello everyone, now I want to tell you a story on the relationship between me and my mother tongue.
我以早細漢的時陣，是蹛佇...是蹛佇南投縣埔里鎮，
Guá í-tsá sè-hàn--ê sî-tsūn, sī tuà tī...sī tuà tī Lâm-tâu-kuān Poo-lí-tìn,
When I was young in the past, I live in......in Puli Township, Nantou County.
彼个時陣是予阮外公佮外媽...彼个[毛/灬]
hit-ê sî-tsūn sī hoō gún guā-kong kah guā-má...hit-ê tshuā.
At the time, I was brought up by my maternal grandparents.
因為亻因有唱 khā[kha]-lá-óo-khe (卡拉OK) 的慣勢，所以講我嘛有的時陣會聽阮阿公咧唱歌，
In-ūi in ū tsiúnn khā[kha]-lá-óo-khe (karaoke)--ê kuàn-sì, sóo-í kóng guá mā ū--ê sî-tsūn ē thiann gún a-kong teh tsiùnn kua.
Because they used to singing with karaoke, I sometimes listened to my grandpa singing, too.
伊唱歌的時，聽阮父母咧講，我彼的時會、會……
I tsiùnn kua--ê sî, thiann gún pē-bú teh kóng, guá hit-ê sî-tsūn ē, ē...
It’s said by my parents that while he singing, I....
就是講會看彼个字幕，佮阮阿公所唱歌的音，來學彼个……彼个漢字欲按怎讀。
tiō sī kóng ē kuànn hit-ê jī-bo̍k, kah gún a-kong sóo tshiùnn-koa--ê im, lâi o̍h hit-ê,...hit-ê hân-jī beh án-nuá tha̍k.
read the subtitles, and listened to the pronunciation of my grandpa’s singing to learn how to read the Chinese characters.
有一工，阿公抑是毋知佗一个親情，就看著我讀彼个衛生紙的彼个品牌的名
Ū tsi̍t kang, a-kong iah-sī m̄-tsai tah tsi̍t-ê tsin-tsiânn, tiō kuànn-tio̍h guá tha̍k hit ê uē-sing-tsuá--ê hit ê phín-pâi--ê miâ
One day, my grandpa or a relative that I don’t know, have seen me reading a brand name of tissues,
佇遐讀，發彼个「五月花」的彼个音，伊就好奇講是按怎我會曉讀彼个字，
Tī hia tha̍k,...huat hit-ê Gōo-gue̍h-hue--ê hit-ê im, i tiō hònn-kî kóng sī an-tsuánn guá ē-hiáu tha̍k hit-ê jī,
and pronouncing "Gōo-gue̍h-huē" (Mayflower). He was curious about why I could read the characters,
來發彼个音。所以講而且閣較早的記錄，毋就……無我捌字的印象。
Lâi huat hit-ê im. Sóo-í kóng nî[jî]-tshiánn koh khah tsá--ê kì-lo̍k, m̄ tiō....bô guá bat jī--ê ìn-siōng.
and could promounce. Furthermore, I don’t remember that I could recognize characters before that.
所以講，我以早頭一个先學會曉的言語就是福佬話。
Sóo-í kóng, guá í-tsá thâu tsi̍t ê sing o̍h ē-hiáu--ê giân-gí tiō sī Hō-ló-oē.
Hence, The first language I have learnt is Hokkien Chinese.
毋過，後來隨著這馬這个時代，少年人學母語的環境愈來愈無友善，
M̄-koh, āu-lâi suî-tio̍h tsit-má tsit ê sî-tāi, siàu-liân lâng o̍h bô-gú--ê huân[khuân]-kíng lū lâi lū bô iú-siān.
Nevertheless, the environment for young people to learn mother tongue is less and less friendly nowaday,
我的彼个能力，而且到幼稚園彼个所在我嘛較少咧用福佬話，
Guá-ê hit-ê lîng-li̍k, nî[lî]-tshiánn kàu iù-tī-hn̂g hit-ê sóo-tsāi guá mā khah tsió teh iong Hō-ló-oē,
so my ability (of mother tongue) [was degenerating], and I also seldom used Hokkien in kindergarten,
後來我就予我的外公抑是其他的人攏嫌講，我的母語能力無好，講啥物外省仔腔啥物的。
Āu-lâi guá tiō hōo guá-ê guā-kong iah-sī ki-thânn--ê lâng lóng hiâm kóng, guá-ê bó-gú lêng-li̍k bô-hó, kóng siánn-mi̍h guá-síng-á-khiunn siánn-mi̍h--ê.
Then I was disliked by my grandpa or others because the ability of my mother tongue wasn’t good. They told that it was just like  Mainlanders’ (people from other provinces) accent.
毋過一个囝仔若是按呢想，而且無彼个適當的環境予伊閣學，伊用母語的自尊心就會較彼个衰退，
M̄-koh tsi̍t-ê gín-á ā[nā]-sī án-ne siúnn, jî-tshiánn bô hit-ê sik-tong--ê khuân-kíng hōo i koh o̍h, i iōng hit ê bó-gú--ê tsū-tsun-sim tiō ē khah hit ê suai[sue]-thuè,
However, if a child thinks so, and there’s no suitable environment for him to learn, his confidence to speak mother tongue would decline.
所以講我後來就是堅決著無用彼个福佬語咧講，攏開始咧用國語，毋過，一直到我十六歲的彼个時陣，
Sóo-í kóng, guā āu-lâi tiō-sī kian-kuat-tio̍h bô iōng hit ê Hō-ló-oē teh kóng, lóng khai-sí leh iōng Kok-gí, m̄-koh it-ti̍t kàu guá tsa̍p-la̍k huè--ê hit ê sî-tsūn
Hence, I insisted on not speak Hokkiens, and started speaking Mandarin until I was 16.
我是好奇講彼个台灣福佬話有彼个推薦用字，而且閣有福佬話
Guá sī hònn-kî kóng hit ê Tâi-uân Hō-ló-uē ū hit ê thui-tsiàn iōng-jī, jî-tshiánn koh ū Hō-ló-uē
I’m curious about the recommanded Chinese characters of Taiwanese Hokkien, and about Hokkien
維基百科 Wikipedia，所以講我著漸漸仔開始咧對這个我的生疏的母語開始感覺有興趣。
Uî-ki Pah-kho Wikipedia, sóo-í kóng guá tiō tsiām-tsiām-á khai-sí tuì tsit-ê guá-ê sing-su[tshenn-soo]--ê bó-gú khai-sí kan-kak ū hìng-tshù.
Wikipedia, so I was gradually interested in my unfamiliar mother tongue.
就按呢，我就開始對學白話字、學彼个推薦用字開始，著漸漸會曉寫一寡福佬話的
Tiō án-ne, guá tiō khai-sí tuì o̍h Pe̍h-uē-jī, o̍h hit-ê thui-tsiàn iōng-jī khai-sí, tiō tsiām-tsiām ē-hiáu siá tsi̍t-kuá Hō-ló-uē--ê
From then on, I started learing Pe̍h-oē-jī (a Romanization of Hokkien) and recommended characters, and guadually, I can write a little in
文字系統，嘛知影彼个福佬語的文字系統到底面臨著啥物款的問題。
bûn-jī hē-thóng, mā tsai-iánn hit ê Hō-ló-uē--ê bûn-jī hē-thóng tàu-té bīn-lîm-tio̍h siánn-mi̍h khuán--ê būn-tê.
the writing system of Hokkien, and I found kinds of the problems that the writing system faces.
後來我有佮……因為我是基督徒，後來我有
Āu-lâi guá ū-kah.....In-uī guá sī Ki-tok-tôo, āu-lâi guá ū
Later, I with.....Because I’m a Christian, later, I
買……到新竹那爿的基督徒的冊房，買一本以早甘為霖（註：實為巴克禮）牧師所翻譯的白話字聖經，
bé......kàu SIn-tik hit pîng--ê Ki-tok-tôo--ê tsheh-pâng, bé tsi̍t pún í-tsá Kam Uî-lîm (Tsù: Si̍t uî Pa Khik-lé) Bo̍k-su sóo huan-i̍k--ê Be̍h-uē-jī Sìng-king,
went to a Christianity bookstore to buy a Bible in Pe̍h-oē-jī that was translated by Preacher William Campbell [ps. the translator is Thomas Barclay in fact].
逐工透早我會佮阮厝內的人，讀聖經的時陣[亻因]攏用國語咧讀，我猶是用福佬語咧讀。
Ta̍k kang thàu-tsá guá ē kah gún tshù-lāi--ê lâng, tha̍k Sìng-king--ê sî-tsūn in lóng iōng Kok-gí leh tha̍k, guá iah-sī iōng Hō-ló-gí leh tha̍k.
Every morning, I and my family read the Bible. They read in Mandarin, but I read in Hokkien.
毋過到這馬因為實在是「細空毋補，大空艱苦」。所以講我的母語的能力，應該是我華語抑是國語能力的一半。
M̄-koh kàu tsit-má in-uī si̍t-tsāi sī "Sè khang m̄ póo, tuā khang kan-khóo". Sóo-í kóng guá-ê bó-gú--ê lîng-li̍k, èng-kai sī guá Huá-gú a̍h-sī Kok-gí lîng-li̍k--ê tsi̍t-puànn.
However, as the idiom says "A small leak will sink a great ship", until now, my speaking abilty of my mother tongue may be a half of that of Mandarin.
所以講我到這馬猶是有一寡愛學的物件，閣……閣需要
Sóo-í kóng, guá kàu tsit-má iah-sī ū tsi̍t-kuá ài o̍h--ê mi̍h-kiānn, koh...koh sū-iàu
Therefore, until now, I still have something to learn, and needs
閣骨力打拚咧鑽……彼个鑽研的所在。
koh ku̍t-la̍t phah-piànn teh tsng[tsǹg]....hit ê tsng-giâm[tsuan-giân]--ê sóo-tsāi.
studying [My mother tongue] harder.
我最近有佮我的表妹，講著阮的彼个母語的
Guá tsuè-kīn ū kah guá-ê piáu-muē, kóng-tio̍h guán--ê hit-ê bó-gú--ê
Recently, I talk with my cousin about the condition of our mother
情況，伊就講伊的母語也無啥輪轉矣。而且，我最近聽著
tsîng-hóng, i tiō kóng i--ê bó-gú mā bô siánn lián-tńg--ah. Nî[Jî]-tshiánn, guá-tsuè-kīn thiann-tio̍h
tongue (Hokkien), she said that she couldn’t speak it well. In recent times, I heard
阮厝內的巷仔的囝仔咧彼个交談、開講的聲音
Gún tshù-lāi--ê hāng-á--ê gín-á leh hit-ê kau-tâm, khai-káng--ê siann-im
the children in the lane by my house talking and chatting
差不多聽無半句福佬話，攏是國語矣。這是非常悲哀的現象，若是咱、若是咱
tsha-put-to thiann-bô puànn-kù Hō-ló-oē, lóng-sī Kok-gí--ah. Tse sī hui-siông pi-ai--ê hiān-siōng, nā-sī lán ,nā-sī lán
seldom in Hokkien, almost in Mandarin. It’s a sorrowful event. If we
的母語，毋管伊是客語、原住民語，抑是福佬話，若逐家攏無那个播揚閣傳承的意識，這个
ê bó-gú, m̄-koán i sī Kheh-gí, goân-tsù-bîn gí, iah-sī Hō-ló-oē, nā ta̍k-ke lóng bô hit-ê pòo-iông koh thuân-sîng--ê ī[ì]-sek, tsit ê
aren’t conscious of popularizing and passing on our mother tongue, whether it’s Hakka, Taiwanese Austronesian languages, or Hokkien
這个言語定著會死無去。所以我向望逐家會當共同來學，
tsit ê giân-gí, tiānn-tio̍h ē sí bô-khì. Sóo-í guá ǹg-bāng ta̍k-ke ē-tàng kiōng-tông lâi o̍h,
The language will be extinct. Hence, I hope that everyone can learn
共同骨力講咱的言語、咱的族語、咱的話。多謝，多謝逐家的指教。
