Unlike others, what I would like to talk about are not stories, but my opinion.
Since the advocative movement to popularize Mandarin in 1955
the entire country (and) the educational system are being conducted in Mandarin.
As a result, many children have lost the mastery and the emphasis of their own mother tongue.
There are also many people, who only speak in Mandarin themselves, have neglected
the respect for other languages or dialects. This is very regrettable.
In my case, I grew up in Hong Kong; around 7 or 8 years old when I entered primary school,
I started to learn to speak Mandarin. Then, around 17 to 18 years old
due to a fortunate opportunity, I also began to learn a little Shanghainese. In addition
Growing up, my education involved English, and my family sometimes spoke French at home.
but mainly, I still speak Yue-yu/Guangzhou-hua (Cantonese) primarily
Furthermore, in my developmental stages, I am aware of the existence of some other different dialects.
Therefore I think, everyone should mutually respect and tolerate each other; and not invariably think
their own language or dialect is superior, thus, loose respect toward other language or dialect
Similar to many people whose mother tongue is in Mandarin, in Shanghai, are not so respectful toward some Shanghainese speakers.
And the Shanghainese speakers themselves do not have a mother tongue consciousness to defend their own mother tongue as well.
Moreover there is a severe lack of a Wu-yu area including: Suzhou-hua, Hangzhou-hua, Shanghai-hua
Changzhou-hua etc. "joint consensus
to congregate collectively." this is a bit lacking. So I feel, this is somewhat a pity.

是的,普通话是很重要,但是各地的方言也很重要,这些文化瑰宝不能丢。
