Hey all, I’m from Songqiao. The Songqiao dialect is very similar, if not identical to the Gongdao dialect.
Therefore the dialect that I’m using today is in fact the Gongdao dialect of Yangzhou. Today I’m gonna use
tell you guys a story about the dialect itself in my dialect.
This dialect is called \"Mahuzi is here\". So what does \"Mahuzi is here\" mean? It’s usually used by adults to discipline their children.
When a child cries, his parents would say to him: \"Stop crying or else Mahuzi is gonna come and take you.\"
So who on earth is this Mahuzi? It\'s said that the real name of Mahuzi is
The Emperor of Sui wanted to visit Yangzhou. So he commanded General Ma Gu to build a canal (so that he could take a boat down from his capital to Yangzhou).
This Ma Gu guy, it is said that he was a Hu. Hu refers to...um
the northern barbarians. Ma Gu is strong and fierce, with a face covered with thick beards,
in fact, whiskers. Ma Gu was a really strict supervisor.
And even worse, he has this terrifying habit of eating a child every night.
So his men went out to hunt for children every night.
Whenever they heard children crying, they would broke into that family, took their child and cook it for Ma Gu. This is indeed quite terrifying.
From then on, the parents would use
the line \"Mahuzi is here\" to stop their child from crying. Why do we call him Mahuzi? His real name is Ma Gu and it later becomes Mahuzi. That\'s because Gu and Hu sounds
similar. Since Ma Gu had a large beard, gradually people started calling him Ma Huzi instead.
\"Humazi is here!\" It just terrifies the kids. Alright, that\'s it for today! Bye!
